LIFE. “An artist can say everything with the help of flowers …” Edward Manet It is the floral still lifes, the last years of Mane’s life, that have become the theme for the new painting series Life.Still.Life. Being seriously ill, after the infrequent visits of friends, Mane painted small-sized still-lifes of flowers. It is these modest bouquets of the 1980s that are astonishing in their cleanliness, honesty, casual plasticity, depth of space. The theme of “momento mori” (always remember death) always sounded in the still life of Mane. Each flower seems to remind us of the inevitable transition to eternity.
